Students of English Studies with German learn English and German simultaneously. During the program, English courses are taught at a higher level of competency and include linguistics, intensive language development, as well as cultural and historical background of the English speaking countries. German classes, on the other hand, start at the beginner level and gradually develop language competences. Graduates of the program are able to communicate in three languages: their mother tongue, English and German.

Program of Study

Why English Studies with German?

The Program of English Studies with German is addressed to people who have aptitude for language learning. Prospective students should be able to speak English at the CEFR B2 or higher level and must provide appropriate English proficiency certificates.
English Studies with German are a good choice for those interested in the European culture. The program nicely complements studies in other fields, such as: business, political or cultural studies. The combined skills gained during a double major program, equip graduates with English and German language skills that broaden their range of employment opportunities.

Multicultural Environment

English Studies at SWPS University offer a friendly and multicultural environment, contributing to the students’ development of language and interpersonal skills as well as cross-cultural competencies. International students comprise close to twenty five per cent of the student population. Therefore, students have ample opportunities to practice English not only in class, but also in daily and informal interactions with each other.

German Skills – Employment Asset

The Program of English Studies with German focuses on language learning. The advanced level of English and intensive German courses, coupled with cultural background, equip students with practical skills sought after by employers.

Road to graduation

During the first year of study you will: develop your English language skills, get an introduction to linguistics, study history and culture of English speaking countries, and develop study and career management skills. You will also begin an intensive course in Spanish (6 hours a week).

During the second year of study you will: further develop your English and Mandarin skills, begin literature courses, start the module of teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL), and learn about translation theory and translation techniques. At this time you will also choose subjects related to your specialization. You will be able to tailor your curriculum by including courses from the Department of Hispanic Studies. At the end of the academic year, you will write CEFR C1 level exam in English, confirming your language proficiency.

During the third year of study you will continue English studies enhanced by elective subjects and courses in teaching methodology (TEFL). You will attend advanced level courses in the disciplines appropriate to your chosen specialization and you will develop your German skills to CEFR B2 level. You will also learn about the historical and cultural background of the German speaking countries. Additionally, with the support of your academic advisor, you will be working on your Bachelor thesis.

Specializations

Translation Studies

Translation Studies focus on translation theory and practice and on intensive language skills development. All courses are taught by experienced translators and linguists. Students become familiar with the requirements of general and specialized translation. They practice various translation methods and techniques used in written and oral translation. All translation courses are developed in accordance with the guidelines of the European Union’s Directorate-General for Translation.

Additionally, Translation Studies develop social interaction skills and multicultural awareness hence the graduates are well prepared not only for careers in translation, but also in other professions requiring excellent communication skills and ability to work in a diverse environment.

English in Business and Media

English in Business and Media is focused on Business English with elements of economy, marketing and public relations. Students learn about organizational structure, business management, business environment and market issues. They also become familiar with particulars of business writing and learn how to prepare business plans, reports and business strategy. They also gain general business skills, such as presentation or negotiation skills and learn about business code of conduct.

Graduates of English Studies with German build successful careers in various industries, including education, translation, international business, marketing and advertising, media, film and TV production, government administration, and NGOs.

Further Education

Students of English Studies with German may choose to further develop their English skills in teaching (TEFL), translation or business and media specializations or opt for studies in a different discipline, such as cultural studies at the second level (Master’s Degree). After obtaining a graduate degree, those wishing to continue their academic career may undertake doctoral studies at University SWPS.

  3. Send the required documents to the Admissions Office
  4. Wait for a Conditional Acceptance Letter
  5. Pay the Tuition Fee
  6. Wait for the Final Acceptance Letter
  7. Upon your arrival in Poland, submit original documents to the Admissions Office
  8. During the first semester, submit the Nostrificaiton of your diploma
