There are many languages and dialects spoken in China. At SWPS University, we teach Mandarin, which is actively used by over 1.3 billion speakers around the globe. This makes Mandarin the most frequently used language in the world.

Students of English Studies with Mandarin learn English and Mandarin simultaneously. During the program, English courses are taught at a higher level of competency and include linguistics, intensive language development, as well as cultural and historical background of the English speaking countries. Mandarin classes, on the other hand, start at the beginner level and gradually develop language competences. Graduates of the program are able to communicate in three languages: their mother tongue, English and Mandarin.

Latest Tools and Technology

Students at the Institute of English Studies develop their language skills using state-of-the art tools and technologies, including a Simultaneous Interpretation Laboratory, Computer Assisted Translation programs (CAT tools), and digital interactive whiteboards.

Important Center for East-Asia Studies

University SWPS is an important center for East-Asia Studies in Poland. The department offers a vast library of texts and multimedia on Asian history, politics and culture. The Centre for East-Asian Civilizations focuses on the ideological, political and spiritual tradition of East-Asian culture as well as on the contemporary changes happening in the region, including China, Japan and Burma.

Road to graduation

During the first year of study you will develop your English skills, get an introduction to linguistics, study history and culture of the English speaking countries, and develop study and career management skills. You will also begin an intensive course in Mandarin (6 hours a week).

During the second year of study you will further develop your English and Mandarin skills, begin literature courses, start the module of teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL), and learn about translation theory and translation techniques. At this time you will also choose subjects related to your specialization. You will be able to tailor your curriculum by including courses from the Department of East-Asian Studies. At the end of the academic year, you will write the CEFR C1 level exam in English, confirming your language proficiency.

During the third year of study you will continue English studies enhanced by elective subjects and courses in teaching methodology (TEFL). You will attend advanced level courses in the disciplines appropriate to your chosen specialization and you will develop your Mandarin skills to CEFR B2 level. Additionally, with the support of your academic advisor, you will be working on your Bachelor thesis.

Specializations

Translation Studies

Translation Studies focus on translation theory and practice and on intensive language skills development. All courses are taught by experienced translators and linguists. Students become familiar with the requirements of general and specialized translation. They practice various translation methods and techniques employed in written and oral translation. All translation courses are developed in accordance with the guidelines of the European Union’s Directorate-General for Translation.

Additionally, Translation Studies develop social interaction skills and multicultural awareness, hence the graduates are well prepared not only for careers in translation, but also in other professions, requiring excellent communication skills and ability to work in a diverse environment.

English in Business and Media

English in Business and Media is focused on teaching business English with elements of economy, marketing and public relations. Students learn about organizational structure, business management, business environment and market issues. They also become familiar with particulars of business writing and learn how to prepare business plans, reports and business strategy. They also gain general business skills, such as presentation or negotiation skills and learn about business code of conduct.

Career Prospects

Graduates of English Studies with Mandarin build successful careers in various industries, including education, international business, media, marketing and advertising, film and TV production, government administration, and NGOs. They are also sought after as translators with unique Mandarin skills.

Further Education

Students of English Studies with Mandarin may simultaneously choose another undergraduate major, for example Cultural or East-Asia Studies. Graduates of the program may choose to further develop their English skills in teaching (TEFL), translation or business and media specializations at the second (Master’s Degree) level at University SWPS.

  4. Wait for a Conditional Acceptance Letter
  5. Pay the Tuition Fee

  7. Upon your arrival in Poland, submit original documents to the Admissions Office
